Mosiria issues instructions to motorists parking in Nairobi CBD
By Nancy Marende, September 23, 2025Nairobi County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, has called on motorists to help reduce air pollution in the city by switching off their vehicle engines while parked in the Central Business District (CBD).
Speaking while releasing the latest air quality updates on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Mosiria urged Nairobi residents to wear masks in the areas around the Fire Station in the CBD due to pollution caused by vehicles.
“If you are heading into the CBD, particularly near the fire station, kindly wear a mask. Pollution in this area is mainly caused by vehicle emissions. That is why I am urging motorists: when you park your car, please switch off the engine,” he stated.
Further, he appealed to Nairobi residents to avoid practices that worsen air pollution, such as burning waste, illegal dumping, and releasing untreated smoke from factories.
“For those with asthma and other respiratory conditions, please wear a mask where air quality is moderate. Let’s all do our part in reducing pollution and safeguarding public health,” he added.
Illegal waste disposal
This comes a few weeks after authorities in Nairobi arrested several vendors and landlords in Eastleigh, Kamukunji Constituency, for illegal waste disposal, which has been clogging roads and drainage systems in the busy commercial hub.
In a statement on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria revealed that those arrested include barbershop operators and small hotel owners accused of indiscriminately dumping garbage on the roads, leaving heaps of waste that blocked nearly half of the roadway.

He also stated that further investigations revealed that the offenders had clogged the entire drainage system with waste, thereby worsening sanitation and increasing the risk of flooding in the area.
The persons of interest were arraigned in court on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
Furthermore, Mosiria warned that the county will not tolerate environmental lawbreakers, stating that his office has been receiving numerous complaints from residents about worsening pollution, with reports that some landlords are encouraging tenants to dispose of waste illegally.
“We are issuing a strict warning to the people of Eastleigh. This impunity will not continue. Our teams will be closely monitoring the situation and enforcing the law to restore environmental order in the area,” Mosiria said.
He further announced that enforcement teams would maintain a permanent presence in Eastleigh, camping both day and night to ensure full compliance with waste management regulations.
