Morara: Helping Kenyans is overwhelming due to tribalism and ignorance
By Mustafa Juma, July 24, 2025Activist and political commentator Morara Kebaso has outlined some of the reasons why he announced that he was stepping back from active politics.
Speaking on the night of Wednesday, July 23, 2025, during an interview with media personality Andrew Kibe that was livestreamed on X, Morara cited emotional exhaustion and the deep-rooted challenges of tribalism and ignorance among Kenyans.
Reflecting on his political journey, Morara revealed that his involvement in politics began at a very young age.
“I have been in politics on and off since I was born, basically because I attended my first rally when I was seven years old. I was in leadership in primary school, in high school, and in campus in the student’s union,” he said.
Morara became a prominent voice in the Gen Z movement that swept the country from 2024 into 2025, championing social justice, accountability, and systemic change.
Morara overwhelmed
However, he now says the weight of the struggle has become overwhelming.
“I came to this Gen Z movement, and I participated from last year to around last month—so that is probably a year. So I have been in this thing, but nimefika mahali, I am overwhelmed,” he told Kibe.
“It is okay to be overwhelmed, and it is also okay to take a break.”

Morara on Kenyans
He expressed his disappointment with the very people he sought to help, saying that he underestimated the magnitude of the cultural and psychological barriers facing Kenyan society.
“Overwhelmed means Kenyans are very difficult people to help. Kusaidia Wakenya ni kazi ngumu sana,” he said.
“In my naivety, I believed I could help because I felt like the moment was ripe and Kenyans want change.”
“But the more I went into politics, the more I went into the ground, and the more I interacted with Kenyans, I realised that they have a fundamental problem—and one of those problems is tribalism and ignorance.”
While he has not ruled out a return to activism or politics in the future, Morara made it clear that, for now, he needs to step back and recharge.
