Moi University closes indefinitely over unrest

Moi University on Thursday, October 3, 2024, announced closure due to the persistent industrial action by the staff.

The week-long strike by the Moi University staff over poor working conditions had led to student unrest.

The university in a statement issued through social media platforms stated that its senate had resolved to suspend the teaching and learning activities of the first semester of the 2024/2025 Academic Year following a meeting that was held on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

“The University Senate in a Special Meeting held today Thursday 3rd October 2024 resolved to suspend the teaching and learning activities of the 1″ Semester 2024/2025 Academic Year as a consequence of the industrial action of staff and subsequent student unease,” the statement read in part.

Moi University campuses affected

The closure was to apply with immediate effect, with the students in all campuses being directed to vacate the Moi University premises immediately.

International students were requested to liaise with the Dean of Students for further direction.

“This is, therefore, to announce the closure of the University with immediate effect. Further, all students are advised as follows:- All students in all Campuses should vacate the University premises with immediate effect, All students residing in the University halls of residence should vacate with immediate effect, All International students are requested to liaise with the Dean of Students for further direction. Re-opening dates will be communicated in due course,” the university stated in the statement.

Further, the university promised to work around the clock to ensure normal operations resume as soon as possible.

“The University Council and Management are working to ensure that University operations resume as soon as possible. Further, we thank the students for their understanding and support in maintaining calm during the period where Academic programmes were disrupted,” it stated.

Moi University strike

Moi University lecturers and non-teaching staff on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, staged demonstrations in Eldoret City.

They are demanding payment of delayed salaries and implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

They have also accused Moi University management of exploiting them through third-party deductions from workers’ payslips which did not reflect in their overall balances.
