Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has urged his supporters to remain calm and avoid causing a raucous in the city.
Sonko published the statement on his Facebook page telling his fans to let law enforcement agencies perform their duties.
“I am a law-abiding citizen, and therefore, ask my supporters to stay away from the courts or any other activities that may threaten the peace,” said Sonko.
Sonko was charged on Monday morning with corruption and conflict of interest over alleged irregular tendering.
After he was charged, his lawyers applied for the governor to be released on bail amid opposition from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Anti-Corruption Court was adjourned to 2.30 pm when hearing of Sonko’s bail application will resume.
“I urge all my supporters to allow the law enforcement agencies to do their work, and let the law take its course. The peace and stability of Nairobi is more important than anything else,” said Sonko.
Sonko was arraigned before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti and there were also reports that he would be transported to Voi to face other charges.
In Voi, the City Hall boss is set to be charged with assaulting the Assistant Inspector-General of Police Rashid Yakub, who is the Coast regional police commander.
DPP contends that Mr Sonko kicked Mr Yakub in the calf during the melee that ensued at Ikanga Airstrip where the governor was resisting arrest.
