Miguna endorses Maraga, calls for clear manifesto ahead of 2027 polls
By Ascah Mwango, July 14, 2025Lawyer Miguna Miguna has thrown his weight behind former Chief Justice David Maraga as his preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, describing him as a principled leader who embodies the break Kenya desperately needs from its troubled political past.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Miguna hailed Maraga’s integrity, judicial record, and independence, positioning him as a refreshing alternative to Kenya’s traditional political elite.
He said Maraga’s non-alignment with political dynasties or the oligarchic class sets him apart in a political landscape often marked by patronage, corruption, and impunity.
He, however, noted that while he supports Maraga’s candidacy in principle, he is waiting for the former CJ to articulate a clear vision for the country
“David Maraga is a good candidate, he represents a break from the past, he is not one of the oligarchs, but to the extent that he has not unveiled his manifesto, I have not spoken with him, I cannot say anything beyond that. He opposed the violations of human rights that occurred in 2018 and 2022, including the ones that occurred against me,” Miguna Miguna stated.
2027 elections
Maraga officially declared his bid for the presidency during a televised interview on Wednesday, June 18, 2025. The former Chief Justice, who served from 2016 to 2021, said his decision followed deep personal reflection on the state of the nation.
“After serious reflection, I will run in 2027 for the presidency of this country,” Maraga announced.
He described his move as a response to what he called rising corruption, impunity, and ethnic-based politics in Kenya.

Maraga, who is widely respected for his integrity, made it clear that his campaign would not rely on wealthy donors or bribery. Instead, he intends to involve ordinary Kenyans directly.
“I am not going to require funds to dish out for people to vote for me,” he said. “I will make an appearance … for Kenyans to crowdfund for me.”
He also raised concerns about the safety of Kenyan youth, pointing to recent cases of police brutality and political violence.
“This has come as a result of what has happened in the country,” Maraga said.
Adding;
“I am a parent … to see our young people being handled the way they have been handled is extremely worrying.”
Maraga, who was born on January 12, 1951, made history in 2017 when he led the Supreme Court in nullifying the presidential election, citing massive irregularities. That bold move cemented his reputation as a man who stands for the rule of law and justice.
As he steps into the 2027 race, Maraga says he is determined to fight corruption, strengthen public institutions, and protect the rights of all Kenyans, especially the youth.
His campaign is expected to appeal to voters tired of traditional politics and looking for clean leadership.
