Meru governor: Kawira Mwangaza’s current woes are payback for her past schemes

By , July 21, 2025

Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia has launched a blistering attack on former Governor Kawira Mwangaza, claiming that her ongoing troubles are a direct consequence of the malicious schemes she orchestrated during her tenure.

Speaking in an audio shared by a local TV station on Monday, July 21, 2025, Mutuma, who ascended to the county’s top seat following Kawira’s impeachment, asserted that her leadership was defined by arrogance, hostility, and calculated moves to silence her critics.

“She is my enemy, and her past deeds are the reason she is not getting peace. Her deeds will not allow her to move on,” Mutuma declared, recalling the period when he served as her deputy.

He claimed that during her first impeachment battle, Kawira actively plotted against a politician who had spearheaded efforts to remove her from office.

According to Mutuma, he personally confronted her sister and even informed the targeted politician, who he says can bear witness to his claims.

The governor went further to claim that Kawira had formed a clique known as the “Mother Defence Force,” which, he claimed, was created to intimidate and counter any individual or group that dared oppose her.

“I have heard with my own ears her saying that she wants to rule with an iron fist like former President Moi. If someone says what she does not want, the person is hit in the head. That is what she was planning to rule the Meru people. But God, who is in heaven, saw it,” Mutuma stated, accusing her of nurturing an oppressive style of governance.

Mutuma insisted that Kawira’s present predicaments are nothing short of divine retribution for what he described as her “evil plans.”

“There is no evil plan, even if you plan it under the blankets, that God will not hear. And that is what God rewarded you for – the plans and the evil ways that you had. And the plans that you had for Meru people,” he added.

He further claimed that her pursuit of power was so extreme that she could sacrifice anyone, including members of her own family, for political survival.

“And the plans that you had for the people of Meru. You can sacrifice anybody for your own safety; you have even sacrificed your own family.”

Mutuma’s leadership

Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia was sworn in as the new Meru County Governor on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Mwendantu Grounds, following the upheld impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza.

In the ceremony held, Mutuma, who previously served as Meru’s Deputy Governor, automatically assumed the county’s top leadership position in accordance with Article 182(2) of the Constitution.

In his inaugural speech to the thousands of residents who gathered to witness this historic event, the new governor expressed his gratitude and commitment to serving the people of Meru.

“Today is a solemn and significant day for our beloved county. I stand before you humbled and deeply honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading Meru County as your Governor,” Mutuma told the cheering crowd.

He acknowledged the overwhelming support he had received and pledged to lead with integrity and dedication.

“I am overwhelmed by your love, support and enthusiasm. Your presence here and the celebrations that broke out in all parts of the county are a clear indication of the confidence you have in me. I promise not to let you down,” Mutuma stated.

Emphasising the importance of unity in the county, he clarified that his leadership would focus on service rather than grand promises.

“I am aware that we face many challenges and I am here not to make grand promises but to offer you servant leadership, commitment to unity and dedication to working hand in hand with all of you to build a brighter future for Meru,” he pledged.
