Medical workers decry rising hooliganism after attack on colleague
By K24 Digital Reporter, October 3, 2025Medical laboratory officers under the Kenya Union of Medical Laboratory Officers (KUNMLO) have condemned rising cases of hooliganism against healthcare workers.
This follows an incident where four people assaulted and injured a medical laboratory officer, Alex Wafula Wamukota, at Lukhome Health Centre on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

Speaking to the press in Kitale town, KNUMLO Trans Nzoia branch Executive Secretary Machuki Ouko condemned hooliganism against medics and called for enhancement of security protocols in the health facilities within Trans Nzoia County.
Ouko said their colleague sustained serious injuries on the right thumb, forehead, and neck.
“Wamukota was treated after the attack and is currently recovering at home. We call for deployment of more security officers to all our health facilities so that healthcare workers can operate in a safe environment,” Ouko told the press.
Following the incident that was reported at the Lukhome police patrol base, two suspects were arrested and are being processed before being arraigned in court. Two more suspects, including a woman, are still at large.
On his part, Kennedy Kiono, the Deputy Executive Secretary, said if their security is not guaranteed, they will shift their services to police stations where they are sure of their safety.
Kizito Mutama said a rise in cases of hooliganism in health facilities threatens the provision of quality healthcare services.
“We condemn these acts in the strongest terms possible. An innocent health worker should not be attacked in the line of duty. We need a safe environment to operate optimally and serve our clients,” Mutama stated in a press conference.

Agather June Nantale, a medical laboratory officer in Endebess, narrated how she was saved by well-wishers when an angry client tried to assault her when she was on a night shift.
On April 1, 2025, a nurse at Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital was assaulted by a communications officer in the office of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya. The case is active at Kitale law courts.
On 3 September 2025, Eudia Omenda, a clinical officer at Sitatunga Health Center, was physically assaulted in the line of duty by Joshua Onyando, a retired teacher.
