By , August 27, 2025

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has taken to social media to commemorate Katiba Day, paying tribute to the individuals who worked tirelessly to deliver Kenya’s 2010 Constitution, widely regarded as one of the most transformative constitutions in the world.

Maraga used the occasion to honour those who lost their lives while agitating for constitutional reforms, calling them “Mashujaa” and emphasising that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.

In his message on Instagram on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Maraga celebrated all Kenyans who have worked since August 2010 to ensure the Constitution is fully implemented. He highlighted the ongoing importance of civic engagement and vigilance, particularly at a time when some political actors have sought to undermine the document.

Honouring Gen Z

Maraga singled out the Gen Z generation, praising their determination to defend and strengthen the Constitution despite political pressures. He commended their resolve, dedication, sense of purpose, and courage, noting that many young Kenyans have been willing to stand up for the rule of law even in the face of personal danger.

“Many of your colleagues have paid the ultimate price: being killed by a regime which considers nothing too sacred to obstruct its corrupt and criminal ways. Not even life,” Maraga wrote.

He urged citizens to remember these sacrifices and to rededicate themselves to protecting the Constitution.

The former Chief Justice called on all Kenyans to continue efforts to implement the 2010 Constitution fully, emphasising that it remains a crucial safeguard against abuse of power. He used the day to remind citizens of the importance of #tekelezakatiba, a movement encouraging full observance and protection of constitutional provisions.

Maraga’s message resonated strongly with many, as it balanced recognition of past struggles with a call to ongoing vigilance. By honouring both the fallen heroes and the youth leading current efforts, he underscored that safeguarding the Constitution is a collective responsibility that transcends generations.

As Kenya celebrates Katiba Day, Maraga’s words serve as both a tribute and a rallying cry. They highlight the courage, dedication, and sacrifices required to protect democratic principles, and the crucial role young people play in ensuring that the Constitution remains a living, effective framework for justice, equality, and governance.
