Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko on Tuesday defended government plan evict settlers from the Mau Forest Complex.

CS Tobiko, who appeared before National Assembly’s Environment Committee, said the Mau ecological system must be conserved.

“We are dealing with a vital ecological asset. We are dealing with a source of several rivers including Mara, Ewaso Nyiro etc…We are dealing with an ecosystem that sustains life in Narok and Kajiado counties as well as the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

Tobiko reminded the MPs that he appeared before them last year, noting that the same issues they addressed then have not changed.

“There cannot be Maasai Mara without a Mara river and no Mara river without the Maasai Mau,” said Mr Tobiko.

The CS said that the Mara River is on its death and it supplies water to the Serengeti.

Kenya has entered into regional and global treaties, including with Tanzania to conserve the Mau.
