A 30-year-old man who confessed to smoking marijuana to replace his heroin and cocaine addiction has been sentenced to one-and-a-half years imprisonment.
It is alleged that on March 21, 2021, around Kirinyanga road in Nairobi county, Charles Ngugi Wakabo was found in possession of 72 rolls of bhang whose street value is estimated at Ksh3600.
Wakabo pleaded guilty to the charges against him before Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku.
“I am an addict. I attend clinic at Mathare Mental Hospital. The cannabis was for my own consumption. I was previously on heroin since 2015,” Wakabo said during mitigation.
The probation officer who filed the pre-sentencing report told the court that Wakabo told him that the bhang was for his own consumption and that he was arrested on his way to a hospital on Ngara to pick his methadone medicine.
The probation report further says that the offender has been using drugs for a long period of time and that he was enrolled at Maisha hospital in Ngara which is sponsored by the state to enable him cut down on his drug consumption.
He was referred to Mathare Mental hospital to enable him to continue with methadone medication.
The report states that the offender lacks proper care which has enabled his continuous consumption of drugs.
