Police in Kakamega have arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of killing his boss-cum-friend.

Duncan Avaye, a resident of Shikhambi area in Kakamega, is alleged to have fatally hit Britain Mikhalo in the head on Thursday night (June 5) after Mikhalo allegedly eloped with his 36-year-old wife, a mother of five children.

Mikhalo, 37, operated a doughnut business in Kakamega Town, and Avaye would assist in preparation of the mandazis for sale.

Kakamega Central OCPD David Kabena told K24 Digital that Mikhalo died while receiving treatment at a local hospital, where Good Samaritans took him to.

“He was hit in the head with a blunt object at Milimani Estate, where the suspect had dragged him to. Mikhalo died shortly after admission to hospital,” said Kabena.

Neighbours said Avaye and Mikhalo were good friends, and enjoyed an amicable work relationship until January 2020, when the two fell out after Mikhalo allegedly lured and eloped with Avaye’s wife.

“The deceased and the suspect were good friends. They, however, fell out after the deceased successfully seduced the suspect’s wife five months ago,” said one of Mikhalo’s neighbours, Reuben Otiende, revealing that the suspect had, on several occasions, warned the deceased to keep off his (Avaye’s) spouse.

The suspect’s neighbour told K24 Digital that Avaye’s wife had developed a cyclical tendency of breaking up with the suspect, reuniting with him later, and, again, splitting from him.

“I advise men, who want intimate relationships, to look for unmarried women. This kind of death would have been averted had the deceased not snatched his friend’s partner,” said another of Mikhalo’s neighbour, a middle-aged woman.

OCPD Kabena said they are holding the suspect in custody as investigations into Mikhalo’s death continue.
