Malala, Methu hits back at govt over failed attempt to arrest Gachagua

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leaders have strongly condemned what they claim was a failed government plot to arrest former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua upon his return from the United States.

Addressing the rally on Thursday, August 21, DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malalah said the party would not allow any form of intimidation against Gachagua, warning that his security would be closely guarded by loyal supporters.

“They brought over 182 police at JKIA to arrest our beloved party leader and take him to DCI, but the plan failed because you, the people, stood firm with Gachagua,” Malala said.

“We know what was being planned. But let me make it clear, we will escort our leader from the airport to his bedroom if we must. No one will touch him.”

Nyandarua Senator John Methu echoed the sentiments, accusing elements within government of panicking over Gachagua’s growing popularity after his ouster from the ruling coalition.

No amount of goons. No amount of intimidation will stop us from making you a one-term president,” Methu scoffed.

“There are forces that fear his political influence and want to stop him before 2027. But we are ready to stand with him every step of the way.”

The remarks come amid mounting political tension following Gachagua’s U.S. tour, where he held meetings with diaspora supporters and issued stinging criticism of President William Ruto’s leadership.

DCP has vowed to resist what it calls state-sponsored political persecution.

Murkomen on Gachagua’s arrest

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen cautioned Gachagua against disrupting peace in Nairobi on his return from the United States.

Murkomen, saying the security agencies are on high alert, has warned that the former DCP boss could be arrested, citing intelligence reports indicating planned chaos on the day of his return.

“The last time he was around, there were so many goons in the name of protests; we were very prepared, and every other minute, the National Police Service is prepared to protect citizens and their property,” Murkomen said in Murang’a County on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

“We are, of course, aware of those elements of threatening disruptions, threatening football, you know, threatening all these other issues, and I need to say that we will take legal action,” said Murkomen.

The Interior CS also said the government will closely monitor Gachagua’s political activities across the country.

“The security agencies should be prepared for a more chaotic environment as a result of his coming back to the country. Let me say that the security sector is prepared to deal with any insecurity issues,” he asserted.
