Malala and Methu laugh off the police who teargassed them at Subukia

By , July 20, 2025

After managing to get out of a chaotic situation on Sunday, July 20, 2025, that saw them teargassed during an anti-government protest, Democracy for Citizens Party Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala and Nyandarua Senator John Methu were spotted sharing a light moment away from the scene.

A shared Malala online captured the two leaders laughing shortly after finding a safe place to breathe following the confrontation with the police.

In the video, both Malala and Methu appear to mock the police response, claiming that the officers ended up teargassing themselves. According to the leaders, a canister aimed at them missed and instead landed near the police, leaving the officers affected by the very gas they had fired.

Despite the chaos, the two did not retreat from their mission. In the same video, they went ahead to say Wantam, a common phrase that many Kenyans are using to tell the current regime that it will not be reelected in 2027.

The teargassing

This comes after allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were tear-gassed in Subukia, Nakuru, after a prolonged standoff with the police.

This occurred after they had attended a church service at Subukia AIC and held a successful rally in Subukia town. As they were leaving, police officers were waiting just a few metres outside Subukia town, where roadblocks had been mounted.

A contingent of police manned the roadblock, forcing the politicians, led by Malala, to step out of their vehicles and engage the officers.

The confrontation quickly drew a crowd, with members of the public eager to witness what was happening.

The politicians appeared visibly agitated as they tried to engage the police commander, drawing the attention of the public.

Despite the disturbance from the crowd, the commander could be heard stating that the group had not notified the local administration about the rally they had held in Subukia town. Nyandarua Senator, who was part of the entourage, was heard emphasising that all Kenyans have equal rights regardless of political affiliation.
