Makueni family shattered after losing 4 in Ngoluni crash
By K24 Digital Reporter, November 22, 2025A family from Makueni is mourning four members who died in a road accident that occurred on Friday, November 21, 2025, evening at Ngoluni market along the Itangini-Tawa road, killing six people.
According to Mbooni East Subcounty police commander Eprhahim Karani, the accident occurred when a speeding lorry hit from behind a stationary 14-seater matatu at the market as passengers were boarding.
The family members, a mother and her three children, were travelling from Makueni Boys to pick up a student who had completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination when they met their death.
Student escapes death
The student and her young brother, a grade one pupil, are among eleven survivors receiving treatment at Makueni County Referral Hospital.
Musili Ngelu, their father, was unable to speak as he was overwhelmed by the situation at Tawa Hospital mortuary, where he and others had gone to view the bodies of the victims.
Catherine Mwanzia, her young sister, explained that she received a call from his brother to proceed to Makueni Referral Hospital to find out the fate of his relatives, but found only the two boys at the health facility.
“I arrived here last night and found these two here, the one who was a candidate at Makueni Boys and his young brother, who is a grade 1 pupil. I don’t know the fate of the other four,” she said in sobs.
The lorry driver blamed
Mulei Mulinge, who lost his wife, Zipporah Mulei, in the accident, explained how he had lunch with his wife before she left for a wedding before she died in the accident.
He blamed the lorry driver for the accident.
Jackson Mutiso, a survivor who was aboard the fateful truck, explained that they were on their way back from offloading building materials in Kyang’ondu, a market next to Ngoluni, when it lost control, hit a tree, and rammed into the stationary matatu.
He said the driver was overspeeding on their way to Kyang’ondu and back until the accident occurred.
“They picked me up at Tawa, but I didn’t understand the driver; he was driving recklessly on our way. We later found ourselves having caused the accident before the driver escaped into hiding,” Mutiso, who is recuperating at Makueni Referral Hospital with soft tissue injuries, recounted.
Medics at the facility confirmed having received eleven survivors who have been well managed, and only one is in the intensive care unit.
According to Dr Masila, a medic at the facility, among the eleven casualties are four children under ten years.
“Currently, we can confirm that we have one who is in an intensive care unit in critical condition, but our medical personnel are doing what is possible to stabilise the patient,” he said.
He confirmed that the other patients were in fairly stable condition, and one who had undergone a surgical procedure was out of danger.
