Police in Lamu have arrested a suspect, Feiswal Hamadi,35 after he was found in possession of two
consignment of bhang with an estimated value of Ksh500,000.
Hamadi was intercepted at Lamu archipelago by coast guard officers in the wee hours of Wednesday morning after losing his way in a mangrove thicket as he reportedly attempted to outrun the guards.
In a statement by DCI, Hamadi and another unidentified fellow were spotted by guards who were patrolling the archipelago’s Tustiri area at around 4 am while sailing towards Lamu from Matondoni.
They were asked to stop for a random check but they did not. That led to the officers being suspicious before a chase ensued.
“What followed was a dramatic chase pitting the sea thugs against the Coastguard vessel, as their two boats thundered noisily in the calm morning waters, disturbing the peaceful marine life in the sea,” part of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) statement read.
The two are said to have navigated their boat towards a mangrove thicket where they abandoned it before fleeing on foot.
The guards later discovered the bhang consignments safely secured in khaki bags.
“Moments later as they were towing the boat to the station, they found one of the suspects (Hamadi) who appeared to have lost his escape route, attempting to cross the channel,” the statement further read.
Hamadi remains in custody as police launch a manhunt for the remaining suspect.
