Kenya Airways (KQ) has explained that one of its aircraft’s tyres malfunctioned during landing at 12:55 pm on June 11, 2023, leading to the temporary closure of the runway at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
“Kenya Airways confirms that on Tuesday, 11th June 2024, our operations control team received a report from the Sharjah Airport Authorities that there was tyre debris on the runway suspected to be from one of our aircraft, a Boeing 737 Freighter, on a routine operation from Sharjah to Juba,” the statement read.
“Upon arrival in Nairobi, the aircraft did an overflight, and our team ascertained that the aircraft had adequate wheels for a safe landing as only one out of six wheels was damaged,” KQ added.
KQ said the aircraft touched down safely at 12:55 p.m. local time, but during the braking and slowing down process, another tyre failed. This failure left the aircraft immobilized on the runway.
Kenya Airways, in coordination with the airport authority and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), promptly initiated procedures to replace the tyres and tow the aircraft to safety.
“Kenya Airways, in close collaboration with the airport authority and regulator KCAA, diligently worked to replace the tyres and tow the aircraft to safety. The aircraft was successfully towed from the runway at 2:12 p.m.,” KQ stated.
The temporary closure of the runway caused by the incident resulted in some disruptions, but Kenya Airways has expressed regret for any inconvenience experienced by passengers and stakeholders.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and reiterate the safety of our crew and customers is our number one priority,” the airline emphasized.
