Kivutha Kibwana reveals one request he would make to Ruto if he met him

By , September 10, 2025

Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana says that if he were to meet President William Ruto, he would request him not to allow the 2007/2008 post-election violence (PEV) to recur in the 2027 poll.

Kibwana, speaking to a local TV station on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, said his plea to the president would focus on safeguarding peace and stability across Kenya.

Kibwana, a constitutional expert and former legislator, emphasised that proactive measures are needed to prevent election-related violence in the future.

He stressed that the 2007/2008 PEV left deep scars on the nation and must never be repeated, warning that the country cannot afford a similar cycle of bloodshed and chaos.

Kibwana speaks on the 2027 elections

“I would ask of the president, if I were allowed to ask, would be, please let us not go back to 2007/2008 in 2027/28. Even if you don’t do anything else, don’t let us go into that period, and when that happens, Kenyans will say at least that was one thing done so that the country is preserved, to go forward,” Kibwana said.

The former Makueni governor underscored that national leaders bear a responsibility to uphold peace, unity, and the rule of law, particularly as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.

His remarks come amid escalating attacks by some of his allies accusing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of tribalism.

Kibwana’s comments also coincide with debates over skewed allocation of development projects and allegations by close political allies aimed at demonizing the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the next election cycle.

These developments, analysts note, risk inflaming regional tensions and could heighten political polarization, making proactive leadership and dialogue even more critical.

Kibwana’s message thus serves as both a warning and a call for restraint, urging leaders to prioritize national unity over political point-scoring.

Safeguarding Kenya from post-election violence

Kibwana’s warning is a clear reminder to political leaders, security agencies, and citizens that Kenya cannot repeat the tragedy of 2007/2008, which claimed over 1,100 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Experts argue that early intervention, political dialogue, and strict enforcement of electoral laws are crucial to maintaining peace and stability.

As the 2027 elections approach, Kibwana’s message underscores the need for responsible leadership, cross-regional collaboration, and inclusive governance.

His appeal is a call for all stakeholders to heed the lessons of the past and ensure that Kenya’s democratic journey remains on track without repeating the horrors of the PEV era.
