Kiunjuri: Why I refuse to join the opposition
By Wanjira Wachira, November 16, 2025Laikipia East Member of Parliament Mwangi Kiunjuri has ramped up support for President William Ruto, insisting he will not join the opposition as many wish, while his people suffer from underdevelopment.
Kiunjuri maintained that he is in government to stay for the good of the people who elected him. He said there is no day he will insult the Head of State to gain popularity without delivering tangible development.
Speaking during an economic empowerment event at Kona Bahati, Ngobit in Laikipia, on Saturday, November 15, 2025, the legislator expressed confidence that Ruto is a working president who should be appreciated and respected, citing visible progress under his administration.
“So I should be on top of vehicles abusing Ruto when you, my people, have no water, no good roads, and no proper schools? My respect and good rapport with the President is what has brought all the development I bring to the ground,” Kiunjuri said.
He added, “We must rise above populist politics and face reality. A steadfast leader must not be swayed by what is politically correct, but rather by what benefits the people he is leading.”

Security improvement
Joining him, County MP Jane Kagiri said it is evident that Laikipia should acknowledge Ruto as a working president.

“I nowadays sleep in peace because I am not afraid of people dying due to insecurity in Laikipia North and Laikipia West. The county is peaceful, and this gives chances to investors from outside,” Kagiri said.
“When you all put pressure on me to join the opposition, I asked myself: am I a coward or a fool? Being neither, I decided to remain in government so that development can come home.”
This comes just days after Kiunjuri confidently stated that Ruto deserves massive support from the people of Laikipia East, reminding them that the Head of State has been the driving force behind the development projects he has delivered.
Other MPs from the county who have shown support for the president are Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere, elected on an ODM ticket, and Laikipia West MP Wachira Karani, who has consistently defended the government.
Korere and Karani have praised the president for restoring peace in their regions. Laikipia East and West have been corridors of conflict and death for years, with residents now expressing relief over improved stability.
