Kitui High Court judge, Lilian Mutende, was involved in an accident near Syongila market, four kilometres West of Kitui town on Monday.

Confirming the incident, Kitui County Police Commander, Johana Tonui, said the vehicle carrying Justice Mutende lost control and swerved onto the lane of oncoming traffic, leading to a head on collision with a matatu heading to Nairobi.

Tonui said that the Judge sustained head and chest injuries from the mishap, but her driver was unscathed.

News about the Justice Mutende’s accident led to temporal adjournment of court proceedings at the Kitui Law Courts, as colleagues dashed to Kitui Level Five Hospital where the judicial officer was taken for first-aid treatment.

The judge was later transferred to Nairobi Hospital for specialised treatment.

Court proceedings continued after the cases she was handling were taken up Kitui Chief Magistrate Stephen Mbungi.
