Former Presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, called upon the police service to offer protection to Kenyans amid the rejection of the Finance Bill 2024.
Condemning the police interference with the Tuesday, June 19, 2024, peaceful protest, Kigame said that the protesters were fighting for the rights of all  Kenyans including those in the police service and that they should be protected and not unlawfully arrested and injured.
Highlighting the sorry state of the police stations in Kenya and the working conditions of the officers, Kigame said that the police are facing challenges in meeting their day-to-day needs.
“To everyone in the police service, defend the people of Kenya. They are defending you now. We know you are suffering as well. Food, rent, water, education for your children, peace of mind, hope for tomorrow,” he said.

Kigame further urged the police service to follow their job description to the latter.
“You are part of us. Don’t listen when they tell you to attack your brothers and sisters. It’s not part of your job description,” Kigame said.

Condemning the police

Apart from the gospel musician, Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino while visiting the injured cops who got hurt during the Tuesday, June 18, 2024, demonstrations urged the police to protect everyone exercising their constitutional rights.

“To our police brothers and sisters, these young people are fighting for you as well; do not accept to be used to stifle freedom in our beloved Kenya. This country belongs to all of us and we have no other so we must get it right,” he said.

“It is unfortunate that anyone should suffer injuries in the exercise of citizens’ democratic rights.”

Injured Cops

The legislature visited Chief Inspector David Maina and Corporal Moraa who are currently receiving treatment at Nairobi West Hospital.

“Yesterday evening, I visited Chief Inspector David Maina, the policeman who got injured while handling a tear gas canister and Corporal Moraa at the Nairobi West Hospital to check on their recovery. While CI Maina suffered terrible injuries, we are happy with the good work that the doctors and nurses of the Nairobi West Hospital are doing to ensure he recovers,” he said.
