Kenya has registered 17 new coronavirus cases, bringing the country’s total tally to 320, Health CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi has announced.

Speaking at Afya House on Thursday, April 23, the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) said six more COVID-19 patients recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries in Kenya to 89.

All the 17 new infections were acquired locally.

Mombasa produced the bulk of the new infections (12), and Nairobi recorded the remaining five.

The age bracket of the new infections is 22 to 60 years old.

Nine of the 17 cases are male, whereas eight are female, Health CAS Dr. Mwangangi said.

Fifteen of the new infections were registered among carriers picked up by Health ministry surveillance team, whereas two came from mandatory quarantine facilities.

The 17 cases were discovered in 668 samples tested between Wednesday and Thursday.

Four hundred and seventy eight (478) of the 668 samples were taken from suspected carriers in Nairobi, which is Kenya’s hardest-hit region by COVID-19.

Dr. Mwangangi cautioned asymptomatic Kenyans against pronouncing themselves as non-carriers of the contagion.

“This is a new disease, and we are trying to understand it,” she said.

According to the CAS, COVID-19 incubation period averagely takes five to six days among carriers.

“In some individuals, it can go up to 14 days,” she said, adding: “When one is asymptomatic, they can still transmit the disease.”

Fatalities arising from the novel coronavirus stands at 14.
