Kenya posts 123 new COVID-19 cases with Nairobi accounting for 69% of the fresh infections

Kenya registered the highest number of new COVID-19 cases recorded in 24 hours – 123 – bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 1, 471.

The one hundred-plus cases were discovered in 3, 077 samples tested between Tuesday and Wednesday, said Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

With 85 infections, Nairobi produced the highest number of new cases, accounting for 69 per cent of the new COVID-19 ailments.

Mombasa posted 24 cases, whereas Kiambu produced 4 infections.

Kajiado and Kisumu (2) are among the other counties that posted at least a COVID-19 case.

In Nairobi, the cases were drawn from Mathare (33), Kibra (14), Embakasi West (12), Embakasi Central (4), among other areas.

In Mombasa, the 24 cases, were drawn from among other estates, Mvita (9) and Changamwe (4).

The four cases in Kiambu were discovered in Kabete, Ruiru, Juja and Kikuyu, with each neighbourhood posting one case.

The two infections in Kisumu were drawn from quarantine facilities. The two patients, Kagwe said, travelled to Kisumu from Nairobi for a burial ceremony.

Seventy eight (78) of the 123 new COVID-19 patients were male, whereas 45 were female.

The youngest patient among the 123 cases is 1-year-old, said the Health minister, who addressed the press at Afya House on Wednesday, May 27.

Kagwe revealed that 7 of the COVID-19 patients in Kenya are in critical condition, with 4 on ventilator support and 3 on supplemental oxygen.

Three more patients died of the disease. Two of the deceased had diabetes, whereas one had cancer. The total number of fatalities now stand at 55.

Recoveries remain at 405, said Kagwe.

Kenya has thus far tested 67, 341 samples for coronavirus.
