KB rugby showed intent in the Kenya cup final by staging a comeback against a strong Kabras side in the Kenya cup final to defend the Kenya cup award at the Nandi bears club in Nandi County. 28-25 score line in favour of KCB.
KCB looked shaky in the opening 25 minutes or so as Fijian born Jonah Kubu tormented the banker’s defence, Kubu at the heart of Kabras attack.
Heading to the intervals, Kabras were leading 22-0 courtesy of Kubu’s heroics, as a slippery Kubu sliced through the KCB defence to score two important tries for his side.
However, the bankers pressed on to stage a fierce comeback against their rivals soon after the second half kicked off.
Former Kenya sevens captain Andrew Amonde showcased his talent by taking matters into his own hands to score a superb try for a 22-7 scoreline after Kenya Simba utility added the extras.
KCB Captain, Darwin Mukidza, orchestrated a superb try by Amonde before he was shown a yellow card for a high tackle.
In their quest to stage a comeback, KCB Mukidza and Andrew Amonde were sent to the sin bin for their indiscipline on the rucks to the disadvantage of the bankers.
However, Fijian Kubu as penalised and sent straight to the sin bin for his indiscipline to rejuvenate a stubborn KCB.
A career threatening injury on KCB forward Rocky Aguko would see the clash be halted for several minutes.
The KCB forward powered himself through the charging KCB defend, but unfortunately, the experienced forward was unlucky in his bid to score after being stretchered off with a broken leg.
Soon after restart, Jone Kubu and Isaac Njoroge collided in the air and needed medical attention. Njoroge was later sin-binned following the incident and could not continue with the game after his 10 minutes elapsed due to injury. He was replaced by Shaban Ahmed.
The defending champions would go on to score two quick tries through Kenya sevens speedy winger Jacob Ojee and the experienced Amonde with Mukidza adding the extras and a penalty for a 25-25 scoreline.
With the scoreline in a stalemate, the centre referee signalled for a sudden death final as both teams failed to utilise their chances.
Mukidza would go on to score a penalty in the extra time to help KCB retain the title for the fourth straight year.
KCB has won against Kabras in all five final meetings. The bankers now join the likes of Nondies and Impala Saracens on the list of teams who have won it four times in a row.
This being KCB eighth Kenya Cup since they won their first title in 2005
