Kenya has crossed the 1,000 COVID-19 cases mark after 66 infections were confirmed, pushing total in the country to 1029.

Making the announcement on Wednesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said that the Germany government has donated two mobile testing laboratories through the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat.

The mobile labs, CS Kagwe said, will aid in ramping up mass screenings of truck drivers at border points which have been flagged as Covid-19 hotspots.

During the briefing, Kenya’s EAC CS, Adan Mohamed, thanked the Germany Embassy for donating nine mobile labs to the region.

CS Mohamed said that the mobile labs will be used especially at the busy one-stop border point at Namanga on the Kenya-Tanzania border.

So far, Kenya has turned away over one hundred truck drivers at the border point for testing positive to Covid-19.

Lockdowns

Further, the Health boss extended the cessation of movement into and out of Eastleigh, Nairobi and Old Town, Mombasa to June 6.

CS Kagwe also warned against the stigmatization of Covid-19 patients.

“Anyone can get the virus. Let us not discriminate or stigmatize the positive cases,” said Mr. Kagwe.
