Police in Kuria West, Migori County have arrested a middle-aged woman who fatally beat up her 15-year-old niece.

The suspect, a sister to the girl’s father, beat up the minor after she returned home “late”on Monday evening.

The girl had attended a party that was held near her home in Kuria West.

The organiser of the event, Linet Ghati, said she was shocked to learn about the death of the teenager identified as Sofia Joseph.

“Yesterday [Monday, October 21], she was full of life — bubbly and happy. I am shocked that today [Tuesday, October 22], she is no more,” Ghati told K24 Digital.

The suspect allegedly accused Sofia of sneaking out of the house at night to attend parties organised “to prepare girls for circumcision”, police said.

Migori police boss, Joseph Nthenge, confirmed the incident, saying Sofia’s aunt is being detained at Kehancha Police Station as investigations continue.

Sofia, who was to sit her KCPE exam from Tuesday to Thursday next week, was taken to Akidivia mortuary in Migori.
