The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations have kicked off smoothly countrywide with over 1 million candidates sitting the three-day exams.
Candidates will sit the Mathematics and English papers on Tuesday morning and complete the day with English composition in the afternoon.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha and his Interior counterpart Fred Matiang’i are overseeing the exercise.
Prof Magoha started his day in Mombasa while Dr Matiang’i oversaw the opening of the exam papers at Garrison Primary School, Gilgil.
At NYS Primary School, Gilgil, Dr Matiang’i evacuated students from a classroom with a leaking roof and ordered disciplinary measures taken against the head teacher.
The teacher faces sanction for failing to alert relevant authorities that four classrooms needed urgent renovations to avoid putting pupils’ lives in danger.
But the Interior CS urged the county director of education to ensure that the school is allocated funds to renovate affected classrooms.
On Monday, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said all the necessary machinery had been mobilised in regions where roads are impassable because of flooding.
Areas affected by flooding include Isiolo, Samburu, Turkana and Marsabit.
Education and Kenya National Examination Council officials have been working round the clock to ensure that the exam papers do not leak.
