KANU dismisses ties to Ruto’s govt, terms viral clip misleading

By , July 24, 2025

KANU Party has denied any association with the ruling Kenya-Kwanza government.

In a statement by the party’s Director of Communications, Nyainda Manasse, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, KANU distanced itself from a video clip that suggested that the party chairman, Gideon Moi, was aligning himself with the current regime.

“Our attention has been drawn to a misleading video clip that has resurfaced on social media, falsely suggesting that Gideon Moi is currently aligning himself with the current regime,” the statement reads in part.

“The clip in question, recorded during the funeral of the late Hosea Kiplagat in 2021, has been stripped of its proper context and paired with a distorted transcription to deliberately mislead the public.”

Misinformation campaign

Manasse says the timing of the campaign against the KANU chairman comes at a time when the current regime is losing public trust.

“The calculated timing of this shallow and futile misinformation campaign to dupe the public is telling. It comes at a time when the government is rapidly losing public trust and grasping at anything, including fabricating alliances where none exist,” he says.

“We wish to set the record straight that Gideon Moi has neither the desire nor the inclination to support this regime. Fundamental decisions about political alliances are sanctioned through structured party processes, collectively by the leadership and membership of the party.

Political course

“Until such a time as the party leadership and membership make a determination on our next political course and affiliation, Gideon Moi stays put.”

Moi, who aligned with the Azimio la Umoja coalition 2022, lost his senatorial seat to the late William Cheptumo, who garnered 141,777 votes against Moi’s 71,408 votes.

The KANU party leader has retreated from the public scene, with occasional contributions on topical issues affecting the country, through his social media platforms. He has also been seen attending various family social gatherings and weddings in the company of other prominent politicians in the country.
