Kaluma issues fresh demand to Sifuna after threats to ditch ODM

By , August 5, 2025

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament George Kaluma has asked ODM Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna to tread carefully regarding his latest threat to leave the ODM party.

Taking to his X handle on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Kaluma directed the Nairobi Senator to familiarise himself with the Coalition Agreement that binds ODM with other affiliate parties under Azimio, hinting that 2027 political alignments had already been sealed.

Kaluma dares Sifuna

“The time has come for Sifuna to read the Coalition Agreement. 2027 is under wrap! The tribalists can jump and rant all they want,” Kaluma posted.

His remarks appeared to be a direct response to Sifuna’s warning on Sunday, August 3, 2025, that he would walk away from the party if it endorsed President William Ruto for a second term in 2027.

“I am willing to read whatever statement ODM comes up with for dissemination, even if they were to insult me,” Sifuna said during a charged meeting in Nairobi’s Eastlands.

“But the day the party decides it wants to support Ruto come 2027, that one I will not read,” he added.

Sifuna sends a message to Okello

Sifuna did not stop there. He hit back at internal critics within the party who have suggested that Nyando MP Jared Okelo could be better suited for the SG role.

“Some have said Jared Okelo is better than I am at it because he speaks good English. Okelo, be ready if you want to take up my role,” he said.

“If they endorse Ruto, I won’t be a part of that,” Sifuna emphasised, suggesting that the soul of ODM was at risk if such alignments were allowed to take root.

Kaluma, known for his firm defence of the ODM leadership, did not clarify who the so-called tribalists were, nor did he directly confirm whether the party leadership had agreed to support President Ruto.

The latest public exchange reveals growing tension in ODM as succession politics and the question of alliances ahead of 2027 continue to unsettle the Orange party’s internal cohesion.

ODM has not officially responded to either Kaluma’s or Sifuna’s remarks.
