Julius Rutto claims Sakaja’s impeachment was postponed for political reasons

By , September 3, 2025

Kesses Member of Parliament Julius Rutto has weighed in on the recent decision by Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to suspend Governor Johnson Sakaja’s impeachment motion, saying the move was purely political.

Speaking during a live interview with a local media station on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Rutto backed the ward representatives’ claims that were coerced, insisting that their decision was informed by political calculations.

Rutto further said politics and parliament are about numbers, noting that in Nairobi County, ODM enjoys more numbers than the ruling side. He explained that this makes it difficult for Governor Sakaja to marshal enough support to push his agenda.

“Politics is all about numbers, parliament is about numbers, like Nairobi County, ODM has got more numbers compared to the ruling side in terms of the governor, and the governor any given time, would have to struggle for him to have enough numbers to push his agenda. I have seen one of the grounds of his impeachment is, he has failed to deliver on his political promise,” Rutto explained.

“Politics is all about numbers and interests, which is why the broad-based government was formed. Remember, the MCAs said they postponed Sakaja’s impeachment, not that they were coerced, and this is all about politics.”

According to the lawmaker, forwarding the matter to the Senate would have been a costly affair both financially and politically, hence the MCA’s tactical retreat.

“Taking the matter to the Senate would be costly,” he added.

Sakaja’s impeachment

This comes after the MCAs on Tuesday, August 2, 2025, announced that they have agreed to suspend ongoing talks of impeachment, this is according to Makadara Member of Parliament (MP) George Aladwa.

Addressing the press after the closed-door meeting, Aladwa said the dialogue had yielded a unanimous decision to temporarily put the impeachment on hold, allowing Sakaja space to address concerns raised by the assembly.

“For the past few hours, we have had discussions where MCAs expressed their issues, and they were heard. With one voice, we agreed that the pending impeachment be postponed and dropped for now.

“We also agreed that the governor should continue with his work, engage constructively, and implement the corrections he has been asked to make in his leadership of Nairobi County,” Aladwa stated.

The ODM Nairobi chair added that the meeting created a platform for open and honest exchanges, noting that all sides had been allowed to air their views. He further thanked Raila Odinga for bringing together the warring factions.

“I want to sincerely thank our party leader, Raila Odinga, for bringing us together. The MCAs have all agreed to this resolution,” he said.
