High Court judge Mumbi Ngugi on Thursday declined to temporarily stop corruption case against Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Sonko filed an application at the High Court seeking to stop his prosecution and his lawyers wanted criminal proceedings stayed until his application is heard and determined.

Justice Ngugi ruled that she was not satisfied with the reasons advanced for the court to grant a stay of proceedings in the criminal case against the governor.

“I accordingly decline to issue orders to stop any criminal proceedings against the applicant,” ruled Justice Ngugi on Thursday.

The matter will now be heard inter-parties on February 3, 2020.

Sonko was charged with more than 17 charges of money laundering, receiving bribes and conflict of interest in December 2019.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji accused Sonko and his associates of the misappropriation of Sh357 million through irregular tendering.
