Embattled Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is on his own after his Jubilee Party distanced itself from him over his legal troubles.

Speaking on Punchline on Sunday, Jubilee Secretary-General Raphael Tuju said that should Nairobi ward representatives choose to impeach Governor Sonko, the party would not stand in the way of an ouster motion.

“What he is facing is criminal charges. When someone is facing criminal charges, it is out of our province to impose our will. If an impeachment motion is based on the criminal charges he is facing Jubilee Party would not stand in the way,” said Mr Tuju.

Tuju revealed that Jubilee Party wanted Sonko to be the political head of Nairobi County but to have Polycarp Igathe ‘professionally’ run City Hall.

However, Tuju said Igathe’s resignation caught the party off guard since he did not consult widely on his decision to quit.

Asked whether there would be a by-election in Nairobi County as Sonko has been barred from office until his criminal case is heard and determined, Tuju said that they are waiting for an advisory from the Attorney-General.

In his response, Tuju seemed to imply that Jubilee Party wouldn’t mind losing the City seat to the opposition even though a “by-election is unlikely.

“I don’t know if there is going to be a by-election in Nairobi…We will cross that bridge when we get there. The moment someone is charged with criminal charges that is a different ball game…I can tell you there is nothing wrong with party collaboration,” said Tuju.
