Safina party leader and businessman Jimi Wanjigi has been arrested after he presented himself to a police station in Nairobi on Monday, August 19, 2024.

The businessman had arrived at the DCI headquarters in a sleek Mercedes Benz with customised plates when a police officer barred him from addressing members of the press who had gathered to witness his arrival.

Wanjigi had been summoned to appear at the DCI headquarters at 11 am on Monday but appeared at 2 pm at the DCI headquarters to answer questions surrounding his involvement in the August 8, 2024, protests dubbed Nane-Nane.

Similarly, Wanjigi was to shed light on the four teargas canisters, two Motorolla gadgets, seven chargers for pocket phones and a mobile phone police said they retrieved from a car believed to be his.

Wanjigi anticipatory bail

On August 9, 2024, Wanjigi applied for anticipatory bail fearing that police officers were out to arrest him.

In his plea, Wanjigi also appealed to the judge to bar the police from arresting or curtailing his movement.

“Over the last few months, I have been subjected to untold mental and psychological anguish as police officers have been intimidating, harassing and trailing me,” Wanjigi said in an earlier statement.

Reports indicate that the businessman has been transferred to Kamukunji police station following his arrest at the DCI headquarters.

Following the retrieval of items which police said were in a vehicle belonging to the businessman, officers were holed up at his Muthaiga residence for two days but failed to locate him.

Wanjigi emerged from the house later on, taunting the cops that they would never find him in the house and that they had better chances at him by summoning him to appear at the police station.

“Seven years ago, they looked for me in this house, they couldn’t find me. Even now, you’ll look for me in this house, you’ll not find me,” he said, “So, please, msijaribu tena, you’re wasting your time. If you want me, it’s a simple summons and I’ll appear where you want me. Stop looking for me in this house, you’ll never find me.”
