Jeremiah Kioni condemns Nairobi County’s plan to dispose of unclaimed bodies

Kioni has termed the move as unprecedented since Kenya’s independence in 1963.
Speaking on Monday, September 8, 2025, Kioni questioned the state’s role in the accumulation of these unclaimed bodies and urged accountability and transparency in the handling of such sensitive matters
The SG has called for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding these unclaimed bodies, expressing concerns over potential human rights violations.
“Nairobi County government plans to dispose of 295 unclaimed bodies, something that has never happened since 1963, and we think that what Ruto is doing with this commission, which he is talking about compensation commission it is meant to cover up, “Kioni criticised.

Dispose of unclaimed bodies
This comes after the Nairobi county government announced its plan to dispose of 295 unclaimed bodies currently lying at the Nairobi City Mortuary, Mama Lucy Hospital, and Mbagathi Hospital.
In a public notice issued on Monday, September 3, 2025, by the county government, families have seven days to identify and collect the bodies, warning that failure to do so would compel the county to seek legal authority for disposal.
According to the notice failure to collect the bodies within the given period will force the county to dispose of them as required by law.
“The following 295 [Two hundred and ninety five) Unclaimed bodies are lying at the Nairobi Funeral Home from the date of admission, awaiting collection.”
“Pursuant to Public Health Act Cap 242 [Subsidiary: PUBLIC HEALTH (PUBLIC MORTUARIES) RULES, 1991) (2), interested members of the public are asked to identify and collect the below named bodies within 7 days, failure to which the Nairobi City County will seek authority for disposal., “the notice reads.
