Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi has discounted claims that he owns a bank and shares in several other financial institutions.

Speaking on Sunday on K24’s Punchline show, Mr Mudavadi said he owns shares in an insurance company but does not quantify his wealth in terms of numbers.

“I am fairly wealthy. I am not a poor person. I can meet my obligations but I do not look myself in the context of numbers,” said Mudavadi.

But Mr Mudavadi, who did not reveal how much he is worth, said that the law should be amended to allow people declare their wealth and have it examined publicly.

Kibra by-election

The ANC leader, who spoke on various issues, cautioned Kenyans against viewing the Kibra by-election as a proxy war pitting party leaders, but as an opportunity to get the constituency the best leader in a competitive process.

Mudavadi, last week, unveiled former Raila Odinga’s strategist, Eliud Owalo, as ANC’s candidate for the Kibra seat.

Raila’s ODM and ruling Jubilee Party are yet to unveil their candidates for the seat left vacant following death of Ken Okoth in July.

But Mudavadi still insisted that the National Super Alliance (Nasa) is not dead and despite praising the handshake between Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta, the ANC leader said the truce disappointed many in the Nasa family in the manner in which it came.

Graft war

On the war on corruption, Mudavadi said there is substantive political goodwill but warned the taxman against unprofessional handling of tax matters to avoid crippling institutions and scaring away investors.

Mudavadi, who has been criticising the Jubilee adminstration over increased borrowing, said a high public debt risks higher taxation.
