IEBC flags reports of 3.5M new voters in North Eastern

By , July 14, 2025

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has denied reports that new chairperson Erastus Ethekon is planning to register 3.5 million new voters from the North Eastern region.

In a social media post on Monday, July 14, 2025, the electoral body termed the reports as fake, without divulging further details.

Reports circulating on social media indicated that Ethekon had announced that more than 3.5 million people from the northeastern region would now be registered as voters, following key reforms in immigration laws that had previously hindered the process.

IEBC warning

The flagging comes after the body warned politicians against making unsubstantiated claims of rigging in the upcoming 2027 General Election, assuring Kenyans of a free, fair, and credible electoral process.

The warning came after a politician claimed that they would rig the 2027 General Elections in favour of President William Ruto.

“As MPs from North Eastern, as I speak from Wajir, we don’t talk much. When it comes to the president, we say, ‘two-term.’ We’re just waiting for the ballot. Even if we don’t have votes, we’ll steal for him… that’s no secret,” Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Abdi Jehow said.

IEBC, in its statement, termed the utterances as reckless and unacceptable.

“The IEBC is concerned about statements relating to electoral malpractice in the country. Such utterances are reckless and unacceptable in a democratic society such as ours, and IEBC urges all Kenyans to ignore or disassociate with them,” IEBC stated.

“There is no gazettement or declaration that has been made to warrant such desirous political utterances and propaganda. There is no gazettement or declaration that has been made to warrant such desirous political utterances and propaganda.”

The new IEBC team has been facing an uphill task of assuring Kenyans of a free, fair and credible polls, days after they were sworn in.

The team, led by Ethekon, comprises Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol and Fahima Araphat Abdallah as commissioners.
