Huge faults have been spotted across the upper zones of Kipchumwa in Embobut location in Elgeyo Marakwet, following the devastating mudslides and flash floods that claimed 15 lives.

The faults seem destined to extend downwards, putting the affected lower parts of Kaben, Liter and Chesegon in danger of another disaster.

A section of Elgeyon Marakwet County officers carrying out rescue operations and humanitarian support said that ongoing rains continue to hamper the operations with 21 people still reported missing.

Elgeyo-Marakwt Tourism Chief Officer, Lorna Kipsan, said that the rescue mission teams came across body parts, including hands and legs.

“There are heaps of boulders on the affected parts and we have had difficulties making good progress because of the rains,” she said.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya said that they have set up a command centre to ensure the operation continues until all missing people are found.
