First Lady Rachel Ruto has condoled with the victims of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire tragedy.

In a statement on Sunday, September 8, 2024, Rachel quoted a Bible verse from Psalm 147:3 which says “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds”.

“This past week has been trying, but we find comfort in the promise that God is with us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by the tragedy at Hillside Endarasha Academy,” Rachel stated.

“May the Lord grant us peace and strength during this difficult time, as we observe three days of mourning in honour of our beloved departed students.”

Hillside tragedy

21 students from the academy have been confirmed dead after Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura said that 19 bodies were recovered from the scene while two more pupils succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

“The tragic loss of 21 of our children following the fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy in the boys’ dormitory, which housed 156 boys, is a catastrophe beyond our imagination,” Mwaura said.

“Nineteen bodies have been recovered from the scene with the help of the DCI and the government pathologist on site. Two additional deaths have occurred in hospital at the Kenyatta National Hospital and Mary Immaculate Hospital, Nyeri.”

Mwaura, who visited the scene after the incident, said the cause of the fire is not yet known. However, he assured Kenyans that the government has mobilised all relevant agencies to conduct thorough investigations.

“Those found responsible will be brought to justice. The government is committed to ensuring accountability for every learner. Ensuring the safety of learners remains a top priority for the government. We will continue to follow through to ensure that the relevant policies are strictly adhered to,” he said.

“It is truly devastating for the nation to lose such a number of young and promising Kenyans. Our hearts are heavy; our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this tragic moment.”
