Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic Party presidential candidate, says she supports Nancy Pelosi’s opening of formal inquiry into President Donald Trump.
Mrs Clinton said that Trump, who defeated her in a surprise victory that shocked many political observers across the globe, has betrayed Americans.
“The president of the United States has betrayed our country. That’s not a political statement—it’s a harsh reality, and we must act. He is a clear and present danger to the things that keep us strong and free. I support impeachment,” wrote Mrs Clinton on her Twitter handle on Wednesday.
Trump sparked Democratic backlash after it emerged that he allegedly tried to coerce incoming Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelensky, to open corruption investigations against his 2020 rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
The US president admitted discussing the Biden with Zelensky but denied wrongdoing.
But Pelosi, who is the top US Democrat by virtue of being the Speaker of the House of Representatives announced on Tuesday that she will open a formal impeachment into Trump.
Pelosi and her fellow Democrats dithered and resisted calls to impeach Trump for months and it seems the call to investigate former vice-president Joe Biden is the straw that broke the camel’s back.
