The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced the opening of subsequent loan applications for scholars in Maritime Education and Training (METs).
Through a statement shared on its official social media page on Monday, June 17, 2024, HELB notified students pursuing maritime courses from recognized institutions of the application opening.
“Ahoy, Seafaring Scholars! Subsequent Loan Applications Open! Apply now for the subsequent Maritime Education and Training (METs) Fund loan,” the HELB statement reads.
The loans board further stated to qualify for the loan, applicants should be pursuing a craft certificate or diploma in Nautical Science & Marine Engineering, a proficiency STCW Courses or METI-approved diploma/ CDC/Seamans book required, and a Certificate of Competency courses with Kenya Maritime Authority eligibility letter.
“Academic: Pursuing Craft Certificate or Diploma in Nautical Science & Marine Engineering, Proficiency: STCW Course STCW Courses or METI-approved diploma/ CDC/Seamans book required and Competency: Certificate of Competency courses with Kenya Maritime Authority eligibility letter,” HELB said.
According to HELB’s website, the METS offers financing to students pursuing courses in the Maritime Sector being offered at Bandari Maritime Academy and other Maritime Training Institutions (METI) approved by Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA).
How to apply
According to the HELB website, loan applications which are done online through the loans board student portal at www.helb.co.ke require applicants to log in and fill out the required form depending on whether they are pursuing an Academic, Proficiency, or Competency course.
Applicants should ensure the form is properly filled, signed, and stamped by the relevant authorities and guarantors Sign the form and attach all necessary documents as indicated in the checklist appearing in the loan application form and then print two copies of the application form.
“Submit one copy of the duly completed application form with the necessary documents at the HELB Desk at the nearest Huduma Center or Mezzanine 1 Anniversary Towers, Retain one copy of the duly filled loan application form (Mandatory),” HELB instructed.
Loan tracking
HELB stated that it will use the contacts provided by the applicants to communicate on the progress of the application adding that the availability of funds will depend on the number of students supported.
“HELB will use the email and telephone contacts provided on the Loan Application. Form for communication on the progress of the application. The number of students supported will depend on the availability of funds,” HELB said.
