Heavy security was deployed at Meru County assembly premises and its environs after a team of hired goons attempted to torch the assembly in a bid to disrupt today’s debate on the fifth ouster motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza.
Speaking to K24 Digital Nkuene MCA Martin Makazi and his nominated counterpart Kiriinya Mwenda condemned the incident accusing the county boss of using chaos to disrupt a constitutional procedure.
“We have not slept the hired goons surrounded the assembly from 11:00 pm till dawn. They wanted to set the assembly on fire we thank God the police acted swiftly and rescued the situation and also the fire extinguishers contained the fire,” Kiriinya said.
The leaders said the rowdy youth improvised petrol explosives which they threw onto the premises.

“They wanted to gain entry to the assembly by force, you can see stones everywhere; they threw improved petrol and fired explosives, I think they also had the intention of killing us inside here. This is an uncouth and unwanted way of launching chaos and threats to the MCAs who are only exercising their constitutional mandate,” Makazi said.
They said the Meru governor is trying to use various ways to stop the impeachment motion instead of appearing before the assembly to defend herself against the accusations levelled against her such as gross misconduct and misuse of office.
“Instead of coming to the assembly to defend herself, she is trying to use the chaos which has no space in our current nation it is barbaric and retrogressive to start misusing youths to disrupt a constitutional process,” Kiriinya said.
North Imenti police boss Adan Alio confirmed the incident saying the goons planned to access the assembly premises to disrupt the proceedings.
“ Yes we have beefed security at the assembly and Meru Town as a whole because our work is to ensure that the lives of the people and property are safe,” Alio said.
While the proceedings were set to begin at 10:30 am, major roads leading to Meru Town were closed as some protesters including a section of Njuri Ncheke council of elders were spotted gathering at Kinoru Stadium.
Police sources revealed that some of the rowdy youths were arrested yesterday night.
