Health ministry: More than 3.5M children vaccinated in national drive

The Ministry of Health has revealed that more than 3.5 million children have so far been vaccinated against measles and rubella (MR), while 12.1 million have received the typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV), as part of the ongoing nationwide immunisation campaign.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale made the announcement on Saturday, July 12, 2025, through his X account.

He praised the enthusiasm shown by parents, caregivers, and health workers since the launch of the campaign on July 5, 2025.

“We are encouraged by the strong turnout and continued support from all corners of the country. From urban centres to remote areas, we’ve seen incredible commitment to protect our children from preventable but deadly diseases,” said Duale.

The CS highlighted that more than 4,000 “zero-dose” children those who had never been vaccinated before have now received both the MR and TCV shots, a development he described as “a remarkable milestone in safeguarding our children’s future.”

The national immunisation campaign aims to reach 6.5 million children with the MR vaccine and 19.2 million with the TCV jab.

According to the Ministry, vaccines are being administered free of charge at all public health facilities and through mobile outreach stations set up at schools, churches, mosques, markets, and other public venues.

Special teams are also conducting house-to-house visits in areas with historically low coverage.

Duale called on all caregivers to take immediate action during the final days of the campaign. “Vaccination is safe, effective, and life-saving. We must not allow any child to be left behind. Let’s protect every child in Kenya,” he urged.

The ministry also stressed that both vaccines are World Health Organisation (WHO)-approved and have undergone stringent safety and efficacy evaluations.

It further warned Kenyans to be wary of misinformation, urging them to seek verified information only from trusted medical professionals and official government platforms.

“Our government remains fully committed to ensuring no child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease,” said Duale. “We continue to expand access to high-quality immunisation services for every Kenyan child.”

The main campaign is scheduled to end on Wednesday, July 17, 2025, with mop-up activities planned for Thursday and Friday in regions with low coverage.
