The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has filed an appeal in the High Court against the acquittal of Joshua Waiganjo.

Waiganjo was acquitted of impersonating a senior police officer on May 8, 2020, by a Nakuru court on account of insufficient evidence.

He was acquitted alongside his co-accused former Rift Valley Police Officer John M’mbijiwe and former Anti-Stock Theft Police Unit Commander Remi Ngugi.

“The ODPP has filed an appeal in the High Court in Nakuru against the acquittal of Joshua Waiganjo, accused of impersonating as a police officer and 2 police officers who abated the crime. The appeal is awaiting hearing,” said the DPP through their Twitter account on Sunday.

Waiganjo was accused of falsely presenting himself as an assistant commissioner of police.

At the height of masquerade, Waiganjo is said to have flown in police helicopters, led operations, inspected guards of honour in full uniform, and even arrested suspected offenders.

Following his acquittal, M’mbijiwe was reinstated in June and appointed to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General with effect from October 1, 2014.
