A report by the women and children’s rights crusaders shows incest has been on the rise within the country.
This according to the crusaders has thrived under the culture of stigma, silence, and fear.
Ironically, the homes are no longer safe for girls as their relatives and trusted protectors are among the top offenders according to the national hotline 1195.
The extent of incest and other sexual abuses is difficult to measure because the crime remains largely underreported and lacks memory.
Section 20(1) of the Sexual Offences Act, says that any male person who commits incest is liable to imprisonment for a term of not less than ten years.
However, if the female is under the age of 18 years, the accused shall be liable to imprisonment for life.
