The multi-agency matatu crackdown which had forced the Public Service Vehicles (PSV) to issue a strike notice has been suspended.

The suspension comes after a consultative meeting between the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the PSV leadership with other stakeholders including the National Police Service.

In an exclusive interview with K24 Digital after the meeting, PSV chairman Edwin Mukabana said the crackdown has been suspended after they agreed that they should be included in future operations.

He also confirmed that their nationwide strike which was to begin today (Wednesday) has been suspended.

“We had planned to begin a strike today but after the meeting with stakeholders, we have suspended it. We want to be involved in the multi-agency operations in future because we play an important role in the economic sector of this country,” Mukabana said.

The crackdown targeted PSVs that have installed strobe or flashing lights, those with foreign number plates without motor vehicle foreign permits and illegal public service vehicles, including those that operate at night.

Non-licensed Tuktuks in Nairobi and Mombasa were also among those targeted.

The aim was to reduce incidences of road accidents on highways.
