Govt releases Ksh22B for Term 2 capitation
By Kenneth Mwenda, May 21, 2025The Kenyan government has released Ksh22 billion to support free basic education for Term 2, 2025.
The funding targets learners in public schools across the country in a bid to ensure smooth school activities as the new term begins.
“The Government has today released Ksh22,028,911,191.40 as capitation for Term 2 for learners in all public basic education institutions,” the Ministry of Education stated.
The money splits across different levels, with primary education getting Ksh1.37 billion while junior school education receives Ksh8.9 billion. Special needs junior schools get Ksh118 million while secondary education takes the largest share at Ksh11.63 billion.
This release comes at a time when many schools are facing challenges with resources.
“The Government affirms its commitment to fulfill its duty to learners and educational institutions, in line with Article 53(1)(b) of the Constitution that entitles every child to free and compulsory basic education,” the statement noted.
Government warns school heads
The government has also warned school heads against misusing the funds and imposing illegal levies.
“As a Ministry, we will deal firmly with any verified cases of misappropriation of the resources and the imposition of unauthorised levies,” Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba said.
In April 2025, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) reported that some schools had not received their full Term 1 funds. This caused difficulties in running daily activities.
