Kericho Governor Dr Eric Mutai has revealed that 10 boys have been arrested for the destruction of property at Litein Boys High School, where there was unrest on Sunday night, September 21, 2025.

The school was closed indefinitely after students went on a violent rampage, leaving the administration block, science and computer laboratories in flames, as well as the principal’s office.

This is the third time the school has been hit by unrest. Just last term, students staged a strike protesting uncooked rice.

According to reports, the students were dissatisfied with the leadership of Principal Richard Sang and his deputy, whom they accused of poor administration.

Speaking on a local TV station on Monday night, September 22, 2025,  Governor Mutai questioned the logic behind the actions, citing the senseless destruction.

“As we talk, 10 boys have been arrested. What is the relationship between a match and bringing down millions of properties of institutions and riding a cow like a horse? How did they come together? These are criminal elements,” he stated.

Furthermore, Governor Mutai expressed deep disappointment over the incident, describing it as a monumental setback not only to the institution but also to the people of Kericho and Kenya.

“I wish to express my disappointment and condemn the actions that took place at Litein Boys last night. As an alumni, we have seen Litein Boys rising over the years to be the giant school that it is today. Yesterday’s events were a huge, monumental disappointment,” he said.

Speaking earlier in a social media post, the governor assured stakeholders that despite the destruction, he remains committed to guiding the boys of Litein into the men they are destined to become.

“A heritage nurtured for over a century has been reduced in a single day of blinded rage. For generations, this great institution has moulded boys into men, and though the current lot may have faltered, we remain committed to guiding them into the men they are destined to become,” he added.
