The Nairobi County Assembly leadership row escalated on Monday as two factions of ward reps battled for the Majority Leader position.

Trouble started when Abdi Guyo, whom MCAs ousted from the seat on Thursday and replaced him with Dandora III MCA Charles Thuo, tried to forcibly gain entry into his former office.

In the melee that ensued after Guyo’s faction stormed Thuo’s office, unidentified persons opened tear gas canisters.

Police officers found themselves on the other end of the stick as one was pictured washing his face to alleviate the effect of the tear gas.

Authorities have launched an investigation to identify culprits who carried the tear gas canisters into City Hall.

Changes

Last week, ward reps allied to the Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi ousted Mr Guyo and Majority Whip Waithera Chege.

The MCAs replaced Ms Waithera with nominated ward rep June Ndegwa while Ziwani Kariokor MCA Millicent Mugadi wad made Thuo’s deputy, replacing Riruta MCA James Kiriba.

Ziwani Kariokor MCA Millicent Mugadi was made the deputy majority leader in place of Riruta MCA James Kiriba.
