A police constable based at Nandi Hills Police Station has been remanded in Kapsabet awaiting to take plea on Thursday to answer charges of defilement.

Constable Eragae Ekiru was arrested on Monday, August 17, after he allegedly defiled a 16-year-old girl on Sunday who had gone to the station to seek protection after she was defiled in two other separate incidents with the suspects currently in police custody.

The officer is said to have lured the victim to his house where he defiled her before his colleagues swung into action to arrest him the following day when the victim came out to narrate her third defilement ordeal in the hands of the accused who was supposed to protect her.

According to Nandi County Police Commander Samson Ole Kine, the hearing of the victim’s previous defilement cases was lined up for this week and she had sought custody at the station before testifying.

“The girl was there to seek protection because she has been a victim of defilement in two other incidents and she was set to testify because her case was coming up. Once we learnt of the unfortunate incident, the officer was arrested and taken to court today but he will take plea on Thursday,” said Ole Kine.

The police boss said their investigation will not leave anything to chance until justice is served to the victim and the officer as well as the other suspects punished.

“Our work is to protect lives and serve citizens diligently. It is gross misconduct to abuse the trust the people we serve have in us and much worse to abuse our children. Police will make sure justice prevails,” added Ole Kine.

In what appears to be a classic case of jumping from the frying pan to the fire, the victim, a primary school pupil had hoped the police would give her protection following her previous experience in the hands of sexual predators only to be defilement for the third time in the hands of her supposed protectors.

Neighbours who asked for anonymity said the girl became vulnerable after her parents separated.
