Kilifi County Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi has been released on a Sh200,000 cash bail or Sh500,000 bond and surety.

On Thursday, the court also ordered Mr. Saburi to self-quarantine for 14 days, deposit his travel documents with the court and have no interaction with witnesses in the case against him.

The prosecution wanted the deputy governor detained for 10 more days after charging him with wilfully exposing himself in public while suffering from in infections disease without taking proper precautions.

But on Wednesday, Saburi told Mombasa court that he never tested positive for Covid-19.

Saburi’s lawyer, George Kithi, told the court that the deputy governor has never tested positive for the virus and that the charged were only meant to tarnish his name.

“My client did not submit any samples to Kemri, whose results show that he was positive for coronavirus while those of Coast Provincial General Hospital indicates he is negative,” said Kithi.

He presented test results dated March 21, indicating he was free of the virus. Kithi said his client never met the doctor who signed the Kemri results.
