Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has paid an emotional tribute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga, hailing him as a towering figure in Kenya’s political history and a hero of Africa’s democratic struggle.

In a heartfelt message posted on his X account on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Gachagua mourned Raila as “the father of Kenya’s democracy” and “a formidable hero of the country’s second liberation.”

Elsewhere, thousands of Kisumu residents poured into the streets to pay their last respects to ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Gachagua praised Raila’s courage and resilience in the face of political persecution, recalling his years of detention and relentless fight for multiparty democracy.

“You stood tall and strong in intellect, knowledge, and the quest for democracy. You faced brutal regimes and were tortured, jailed, abducted, and detained severally for Kenya,” Gachagua wrote.

“When the history of Africa’s Pan-Africanism is written, your chapter as the indefatigable lion of Africa will attract many readers.”

He described Raila as a man who dedicated his entire life to public service, from his early days as a university lecturer and civil servant to his years as a cabinet minister, Prime Minister, and opposition leader.

Gachagua, who often clashed politically with Raila, admitted that despite their differences, he deeply admired Raila’s ability to build and sustain a strong political movement.

“Much as we were never on the same political side, I have always admired Raila Odinga’s art of forming and sustaining a strong political party that survived four general elections,” he added.

The former deputy president said Raila’s impact on Kenya’s democracy, including his role in the fight for multiparty politics and the 2010 Constitution, will remain etched in the nation’s memory.

“Kenyans will remember your resilience, persistence, and voice during difficult moments. You are a hero celebrated home and away; you have not gone, Raila Odinga, you have just faded away,” he wrote.
